Rome – liberated.

German ‘human torpedos’ attempted an attack on the Anzio anchorage on the night of 20 April. The craft consisted of two standard 21-inch torpedos fastened together, one complete with warhead (slung underneath), the other, the control torpedo has a cockpit in place of the warhead. These photographs are of the control torpedo. The operator’s circular hatch can be seen in the upper and bottom left photographs; it was covered by dome of glass or transparent plastic. When the position was suitable for an attack the armed torpedo was started up and released whereupon it proceeded under its own propulsion to the target. The operator then attempted to circle about and return to his parent ship. The torpedo shown in these pictures beached three miles north of Anzio. The operator was unable to extricate himself and had to be helped out by Allied troops.
